Open sights consist of a rear sight and fore sight. The rear sight is a U- or V- shaped notch and the fore sight a blade, the idea being to line the blade up with the notch. With fibre-optic sights the front and rear sights are different colours, which is intended to help the eye align the two sights more easily. Fibre-optic sights have many other advantages: they provide a much greater degree of contrast against the target than standard matt black sights, making it easier to see exactly what part of the target the sights are covering.
